Mathletics
We have all been working super hard on Mathletics and earned ourselves these certificates. We all earned a bronze certificate and Judah also earned a silver certificate! Mrs Hancock prints our certificates out once a week and if we get a gold certificate we get it presented to us in assembly. Did you know there's also a Mathletics trophy that goes to the child in the school who has completed the most activities each term?
Charlie's Egg
Wow! That egg looks like a sausage. Yesterday Charlie brought one of his chicken’s eggs in because it’s not the same as the other eggs because, it is a oval shaped egg. It’s a small brown egg that a Red Shaver has laid but it doesn’t look like a Red Shaver’s egg because, the shape doesn’t look right. It has a few dark black spots and it’s a very, very brown colour. It was one of the weirdest eggs we had seen. It looks like a rugby ball.
Last night Charlie cracked open the egg and this is what it looked like. We discussed why the chicken may have laid an egg like this.

I Have, Who Has....
This is a maths game that is helping us to understand place value with tens and ones. We decided to challenge ourselves by timing ourselves to see if we could get faster each day. Here is a video we took today. It took us 3 minutes and 36 seconds to get right through the cards. I wonder how fastw e'll be tomorrow?

Sport Taranaki
We had our first session with the Sport Taranaki guys today. We are learning about evasion skills including dodging, running and making sure we use our eyes to see what is around us. Check out the video of Jordan going through the obstacle course.
We played some cool games as you can tell from the photos.

Our New Babies
These are our new babies. Sadly Tiger died overnight, so now we only have 6 babies left. We have named them and started writing biographies for each of them. We'll post them on our chicken blog when they are finished.
M Day for Mackenzie
Last Friday we had a special day for Mackenzie. She has just had two operations to put cochlear implants in her head. She has been very brave. We all wanted to do something nice for her. So we dressed up as things starting with M and all brought along a gold coin donation. Can you guess what 'M' thing everyone is dressed as?

All Things Eggy
Today was a very egg-y / chicken-y day in Room 4. We have so many eggs from our hens that we decided rather than letting them go to waste we would eat them. So with the help of Treena we made scrambled eggs with bacon and fried eggs too. At the same time we emptied out the incubator and put our 7 new babies into the brooder box. We opened all the eggs that didn't hatch and found a lot of fully formed but dead chickens. Next week we'll investigate what might have gone wrong. Also if you check out our chicken blog later in the week you'll get to meet our 7 newest babies.

Maths Problem Solving
Today during maths we tried to work our way through the problem below. Pascoe, Heidi and Jordan's group all shared their ideas. All three groups had different ideas but no one has solved it yet. Have a go at home and see how far you get. You'll need to enter the ZONE OF CONFUSION for a while.
Humpty
Dumpty sat on a wall. The wall is 134cm high. Each brick is 8cm high. The cement
between the bricks is 1cm high. How many
rows of bricks are in Humpty Dumpty’s wall?

Hatch Day
Today, Wednesday, was Hatch Day for the chickens we are incubating in Room 4. When we arrived at school this morning there were 3 eggs with little chip holes in them. By the end of school today those little holes were very big holes! We waited until 4.30 but they still hadn't made it out of their shells. Here are some photos of the eggs and us watching them. Our room was very busy after school with kids and even a few mums popping in to check out our babies progress. I wonder what we'll find in the morning. .....

Black Holes
Today our 'wonderings' were based around the question "what is a black hole?" We had some really interesting discussions relating to this wonder. We watched a small video and then looked on YouTube at an example of two black holes merging. The hardest thing to grasp seemed to be how small earth really is in the scheme of the universe. Jordan was very knowledgeable on this subject and suggested we look at Google Earth because not only can you look at earth, you can look at the moon and sky. Some kids in the class were a bit worried that they might get sucked into a black hole but hopefully we manged to explain that it wasn't possible. Click on the links below to see a couple of short videos.

Black Hole 2
During writing the kids wrote about black holes. Their focus however, was on pushing themselves up the punctuation ladder. Here's a couple of examples. As you can see, they are trying hard to try new types of punctuation.
The Black Hole
"I'm scared what if I get sucked in the black hole." A black hole is in space. If anything get close to it, it gets sucked in. Room 4 looked at photos, videos and then read some facts. Next Mrs Hancock said "we are way to far away to get sucked in." "Yay!" I said.

The Black Hole
"What's that?" I shouted, "I don't know?" said my Mum. It looks pretty deep. We should go closer "ok" said my Mum. Then we floated in to the black hole. "What's happening?" I said suspiciously.
"I don't know" said my Mum. "Whoosh!" We went racing down the black hole. "Ahhh!" We never got seen again.
