Decimals

Over the next couple of weeks in maths we are going to be looking at fractions, decimals and percentages and their connection to each other.  This week we'll be focusing mostly on decimals.
The most important thing to remember is that decimals, fractions and percentages are all parts of a whole thing  - not the whole apple or chocolate bar or pizza - just parts of them.
Here's a couple of video clips we'll be watching during class. You might like to watch them and get an idea of what you'll be learning this week.  Decimals are used all the time in everyday life. Have a discussion with your parents and see how many ways you can think of where decimals are used....

I Went Walking - in Sign Language

In assembly today we performed the Beautiful Solider song from our previous post and we presented this book called I Went Walking. All the children in Room 4 helped to read and sign the book. Pascoe, Emma, Arnika and Porsche made the book in the Book Creator App on the iPad.

Sign Language Session

This week is NZ Sign Language week and we were lucky enough to have Evelyn come and teach us some basic signs such as the abc, numbers and animals. We also read a book in sign and signed a lovely song called Beautiful Solider.
We're going to keep practicing signing the book so we can sign it to everyone in assembly next week.
The first video below shows us going through the signing for the ABC and the second video is us signing the Beautiful Solider song, which is about the solider's dying in the war.

Storyboard

Last week we did some learning using a storyboard. A storyboard is a bit like a comic strip. It tells the story of something by mostly using pictures and only a few words. We made a three frame storyboard showing something that we learned about the World War One and ANZAC Day. Here is Liam and Jordan's Storyboard and a short clip of them explaining what they did as well as Pascoe and Heidi sharing a bit of their storyboard.

ANZAC ASSEMBLY

Today we remembered the ANZAC soldiers who died from this area. Some of the kids at our school are related to these men. Room 5 made the crosses. We listened to the Last Post, had a minute silence and heard a great piece of writing from Connor.
In class we wrote about peace and discussed how it is the opposite of war. We made small doves with peace messages on them and put them on the wall to make one big dove.

Keeping Warm

Today we had the guys from Sport Taranaki come and teach us some more activities to help us with our evasion skills. We were pleased they came today because we got to run around and stay warm!!
