Our Flood Art

On the weekend there was a big storm and lots of flooding in our area. On Monday morning we got into a big circle and shared our stories from the weekend.   (Heidi and Arnika)

We had a discussion about how we always have to do writing after something interesting happens. We decided that this time we'd do some art about rain instead. (Pascoe)

Our goal was to create a rainy day picture using a horizon line and white crayon with ink.(Jordan)

First we had to get a piece of A3 paper and a white crayon. (Jacob)

With our white crayon we drew a horizon line and some oval shaped puddles and rain drops that landed in the ovals. (Ephraim)
Next we used coloured crayons to draw a rainbow or lightning strike in the sky. (Pippa)

While we were drawing with the crayon, Mrs Hancock took a photo of us holding up an umbrella.

After we'd drawn our picture we had to dye it with purple, blue and green. We put bits of the colours around the picture so it looked like a rainy, stormy sort of background. (Charlie, Mackenzie W, Pascoe)

We noticed that the white crayon lines stood out clearly when we put the dye on the paper. (Arnika)

Once we had finished dyeing, we cut our photos out and glued them onto our pictures using a sponge. (Judah)

Then we laid them on the floor to dry. (Courtney)

Then we brainstormed as many describing words as we could think of about the floods. (Heidi)

Lastly we wrote some of those words onto our artwork. (Jordan)
We think they look fabulous and can't wait to see them all up on the wall!!!

Dino Danger

This morning in reading we read about dinosaurs eating leaves and eating each other. That made Mrs Hancock remember the app called AR Dinopark.  (Charlie)

Then we took photos and the dinosaur was in the photo with us. It looked real. We had to do a scarey face while our photo was taken. (Porsche)

After that we made up our story about a Triceratops based on the photo.  The goal for our story was to use descriptive words and hook the reader into our writing. (Pascoe)

We brainstormed a big list of words on the interactive board that we might use to describe what was happening in our story. These words were more describing than usual words. We used them to paint a picture in the readers head. (Pippa)

After we'd written our story, Mrs Hancock shared our photos to us and we uploaded them to our blogs and published them. (Jordan)

Finally we had to comment on someone else's story using effective commenting about their goal.  (Heidi)

Our next step is to look at the comments we received and make some changes. We will do this by copying and pasting the original post and then making the changes in the new post.  (Mrs Hancock)

13-Storey Tree House

Over the last week the kids have been designing their own 13 storey tree houses based on the book called the 13-Storey Treehouse by Andy Griffiths and Terry Denton.  In the book the two main characters live in a tree house with 13 storeys. Each storey has some sort of amazing room in it.
The challenge for our class was to create their own treehouse by using their imagination to come up with 13 original ideas.
After they designed their treehouse they videoed themselves talking about their 3 favourite rooms. Then they had to upload the video to their blog.  I think they've done really well. The kids would love some comments on their blogs about their creations.

Here's a couple of examples ....

Decimals

Over the next couple of weeks in maths we are going to be looking at fractions, decimals and percentages and their connection to each other.  This week we'll be focusing mostly on decimals.
The most important thing to remember is that decimals, fractions and percentages are all parts of a whole thing  - not the whole apple or chocolate bar or pizza - just parts of them.
Here's a couple of video clips we'll be watching during class. You might like to watch them and get an idea of what you'll be learning this week.  Decimals are used all the time in everyday life. Have a discussion with your parents and see how many ways you can think of where decimals are used....
